ALFRED H. MAURER

Hollis Taggart is pleased to present the following collection of paintings by Alfred H. Maurer (1868-1932), a leading American modernist whose work the gallery avidly supports. The artist's diverse oeuvre characterizes the spirit of early American modernism. Maurer was one of the most talented and insightful Americans to work in a vangurad aesthetic in the early years of the twentieth century. Charged by a strong experimental drive and restless energy, he repeatedly pushed the boundries of what it meant to be modern. He moved with remarkable ease between painting styles, media, and themes and remained resolutely committed to imbuing the ordinary with a sense of the extraordinary. Whether painting calligraphic florals, Cubist still lifes, long-necked ladies, or engaging landscapes, Maurer painted with an almost religious devotion to his subjects. As demonstrated by the featured works, he painted with an emphasis on immediacy and used color with intrepid force. Maurer rendered his images in a distinictive gestural shorthand that is now a recognized hallmark of his art.
