Press Release

Hollis Taggart Galleries is pleased to announce its forthcoming exhibition, Dreams and Dramas: Moonlight and Twilight in American Art.  This exhibition brings together variations on the American landscape created by artists from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Dreams and Dramas: Moonlight and Twilight in American Art will explore the diverse theoretical, literary, and artistic conscripts of mood and tone set by this particularly evocative period of day.  Through carefully chosen works culled from important private collections, as well as museums and the gallery’s inventory, we will trace the evolution of this theme, beginning with the Hudson River School’s treatment of the sublime and Manifest Destiny, continuing with Tonalist aesthetics, and culminating with the distillation of these precepts in the work of the early modernists.

Artists represented in this exhibit will include Frederick Edwin Church, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Ralph Albert Blakelock, George Inness, James Abbot McNeill Whistler, Childe Hassam, Charles Harold Davis, Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Charles E. Burchfield, Arthur B. Carles, Edward Steichen and Arthur Dove.

This exhibition will be organized by Hollis Taggart Galleries and Dr. Valerie Ann Leeds, the Adjunct Curator of American Art at the Flint Institute of Arts, Michigan, where she is currently at work on the forthcoming catalogue of the American collection.  Dr. Leeds, who has curated numerous exhibits, including the 1995 show “‘My People:’ The Portraits of Robert Henri” at the Orlando Museum of Art, will also author an essay for the fully illustrated color catalogue that will accompany the exhibition.
