Martin Willing’s engaging kinetic sculptures will be the focus of Martin Willing: Sculpting Motion at Hollis Taggart Galleries. Willing plays in the gap between mathematics and nature, achieving the same visual effect as trees swaying in the wind with precisely calculated and executed geometric sculptures. His work is built upon the principles of physics, in which the artist holds a degree, and experiments with gravitational equilibrium and pendular movement. Subtle responses to atmospheric currents render any stillness merely a held breath between movements. Willing explores the full arc of possible gestures for each shape, often with surprising results, and hopes to produce a meditative viewing experience through slow, elastic motion.

Willing (b. 1958) holds degrees in both art from the Münster Art Academy and physics from Wilhelms University, Münster. He has exhibited widely throughout his native Germany and internationally. His work can be found in the collections of Museum Pfalzgalerie, Museum Würth, and the Cologne Sculpture Park, among others. The artist lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
